The Vulture Conservationist

Fay Archive - Field Test No. 26

Chitwan National Park, Nepal

In Chitwan National Park, the Fay Archive team met up with 'conservationist' DB Chowdry, the mind behind the area’s vulture protection programme. Once decimated by an antibiotic found in the meat of the cows they were feasting on, these animals can now safely eat, whilst also preserving the environment and preventing epidemics from developing.

“Vultures are very important for ecosystem balance: we are all aware that these animals feed on the carcasses of other animals, but don’t realise just how much this helps keep the environment clean and prevent epidemics from developing.”

For this reason, Chowdry has established the 'Vulture Restaurant’, a place where vultures can feed safely. In addition to this project, DB carries out a thorough anti-poaching patrol on elephant back to reach difficult-to-access areas.
