The Inuit Artist

Fay Archive - Field Test No. 30

From Fermont to North West River

The journey into Canada at its most extreme continues. A lakeside haven, deep in the forest: the site where we meet Inuit sculptor Billy Gauthier. The artist spends a lot of time in close contact with nature, which is where he sources both his inspiration and materials for his works of art made from local wood and stone.

“I am a hunter and fisherman: nature is a big source of inspiration. I therefore try to convey this connection with Intuit culture in my artwork.”

Billy boasts close ties with Sheshatshiu culture and community. He feels strongly rooted to this area: his Russian ancestors settled in Goose Bay, Labrador, around 800 years ago. For this reason, his connection with the land is very strong.
